The Geocities Gallery is bringing the early web back to life

The Geocities Gallery aims to restore the sites from Geocities to functionality, and also to create an easily searchable way to explore the kinds of sites people made on the service. It provides a look into a version of the internet that felt open and friendly (if a little anarchic), rather than siloed and hostile.

I’ve been on the web since before Geocities started in 1994 (think BBSs, CompuServe, Prodigy, etc.), but don’t remember ever hosting anything there (though I had a lot of friends who did). I think my first hosting was with a local ISP, at /~justin (remember those days?).

So what’s next? AngelFire/Tripod, LiveJournal? HOLY SHIT—both are still around!
